Capstone and Summer Interns

Students!

Kin-Keepers is constantly looking for capstone or summer interns.  We are a start-up company focused on using machine learning to help seniors with cognitive challenges, like Alzheimer’s or other forms of Dementia.  Our objective is to reduce the anger and frustration that seniors with dementia feel as they struggle to express what they want to say. We accomplish this using an artificial intelligence Parrot.  It becomes an Assistive Self for seniors that improves communication. You can learn more about Kin-Keepers AI PET at the Kin-Keepers website.

You need to do this: If you wish to apply, hit the email button on this page. There you can send us your resume or a few paragraphs about yourself, and what you wish to accomplish with your studies. Then let us know which of the following six tracks you wish to join.

for Everyone ...

  1. Activity - Curate Machine Learning Synthetic Data: This team will search for and review large data repositories to identify and curate data related to Seniors. The curated data will be used to build Machine Language models for our prototype.
  2. Activity - Machine Learning Process – All will learn to go from curated datasets to implemented ML algorithms. We will be using Google Collab with Python.

The diagram shows the design/development model we are using, followed by the categories of work available this summer:

Your specific project:

  1. Activity - Family Circle Application – This team will use a Graph Database and Portal Technology to store family memories of value to Elders.
  2. Activity - Build Alexa Skills: This team will be developing applications (called Skills by Amazon) that can run on Alexa devices. These Skills will interface to a database created by our Family Circle application to help Seniors who struggle remembering names and news from family and friends.
    • Granny Query example: What is the name of my grandson, what is his birthday?
    • Caregiver Query example: What is the history of the person under my care?

Advanced Activity

5. Smart AI Parrot – This team will build a Social Robot following Cornell University guidelines. The Parrot will be a woven puppet that sits atop an electronic cone. An Arduino or Raspberry PI board is inside with ports to IoT sensors.

6. Cognitive Health Assessment tool - This team will develop an online cognitive health assessment tool. It will measure the elder's cognitive state and score it with Normal, Mild Cognitive Impairment or Dementia. You will develop the questionnaire, the graphical results, and the privacy communications required to use the test freely.

7. S.L.E.D.S.S. - This project aims to create user forums to help make lifestyle choices. S.L.E.D.S.S. stands for Socialization, Learning, Exercise, Diet, Stress and Sleep. Elders participate in groups of their choosing to hear and contribute to what works. Group selection varies on several dimensions (gender, age, ethnicity, country, religion, and more). Just join or create a group and start learning. After experiencing a lifestyle choice, go back and take a Cognitive Health Test, to see if what you are choosing is working.

Again, if you are interested in applying for any of these teams, please contact us via the following link: Capstone or Summer Internships | Kin-Keepers

We hope to hear from you soon.  Good luck!

Waqas Khan

Waqas Khan - I am an upcoming Junior majoring in Computer Science with a minor in math and business at Cabrini University. I have been learning Python by myself since High school, I really want to put my skills into a big project, and I wish to learn from the people that I will be working with as well as learning new things related to my major and helping others is my passion because it inspires me more to do better. One of my dreams is to become a successful software engineer in the field of computer science. My strength is time management because I managed to get a 4.0 GPA during my first semester despite taking four courses and excessive workload to deal with. When I started college as a freshman I had anxiety and I was not able to do presentation in my classes. That anxiety was really awful but through my hard work and practice. I have improved myself and I am able to present in front of people, guide others on how to overcome such situations, and eventually help them succeed like I have.

Alexa Skills Team Lead - Ethan rejoins us this summer with a fresh B.S. in Math and CS from the University of California. He will be working on two elder care apps. The first is a memory aid for the senior. It queries the Family Circle and answers "what is the name of my grandchild, what is their birthday? etc."  The second app allows caregivers to get information about the individual under their care. "Who was this person in their younger years? Who are their relatives?"
